Setting up Odoo POS hardware does not have to be complicated. Here is a quick guide to choosing and connecting the most common devices.
Receipt Printer
What you need:
✓ Thermal receipt printer
✓ ESC/POS support
✓ USB or Ethernet connection
✓ Windows/Linux drivers
✓ Correct paper width, usually 80 mm
How it works:
Odoo POS → IoT → Receipt Printer
You can use an Odoo IoT Box (physical device) or Virtual IoT installed on a computer connected to the printer.
⚠️ Fiscal receipts: Some countries require certified fiscal devices, registration or additional tax-system integration. Always check local requirements separately.
Barcode Scanner
What you need:
✓ HID / Keyboard Mode
✓ 1D or 2D/QR support depending on your barcodes
✓ USB, Bluetooth or wireless connection
HID explained simply: the scanner works like a keyboard. Scan a barcode → the code is automatically entered into Odoo.
Scanner → Computer → Browser → Odoo
A standard HID barcode scanner normally does not require an IoT Box.
Label Printer
What you need:
✓ Thermal label printer
✓ Correct label size
✓ ZPL or another supported printer language
✓ USB or Ethernet
✓ Windows/Linux drivers
ZPL explained simply: it is a printer language used to describe the label — text, price, barcode and its position.
Odoo → Select Products → Print Labels → Printer
For automated printing, an IoT connection can also be used.
Payment Terminal
Do not buy a payment terminal first.
Start by choosing your bank or payment provider and ask:
✓ Which payment terminals do you support?
✓ Can the terminal integrate with an external POS/ERP system?
✓ What integration method is available — native integration, API or SDK?
✓ Is technical integration documentation available?
Then follow:
Bank/Provider → Terminal → Activation → Odoo Integration → Test Payment
Depending on the country, additional registration or fiscal requirements may apply.
An Odoo IoT Box is not a universal payment-terminal connector. Integration depends on the payment provider and terminal.
